Rim and Tire

Taking care of your car is more than just checking the oil and changing filters every 3,000 miles. There are a wide variety of parts that make your car run smoothly, and neglecting them could lead to shortened lifespan, or worse, reduced safety. Key among these are the rim and tire sets on your vehicle. Not only do they affect how the car drives, but also how safely the car handles, and how it responds in the event of an emergency.

Check Your Rim and Tire Regularly

Checking your wheels for wear and tear or any damage is a good step towards ensuring that your car performs reliably. Especially if you drive over any particularly hard bumps, or through debris that might have caused damage, it's important to give your wheels a quick once over to ensure that all is well. Inspect the rim for any noticeable dents or warping. These can affect how your tires meet the road, and how effectively your brakes work. It's also important to ensure that you have the proper size for your car and your tires.

Safe Rim and Tire = Safer Car

Check your tires for tread wear, air pressure and any noticeable signs of damage. The "penny test" is a popular way to quickly gauge the health of your tires. Take a Lincoln penny and turn it upside down. Insert it into the tread of your tire – if it doesn't reach the top of Lincoln's head, your tread may be dangerously worn. Check the sidewalls for any signs of splitting or cracking, and replace immediately if any is found.
